This is how they treat customers?

We just moved into a mid-century ranch in June and have been buying appropriate furniture as we can afford it. We've been shopping all over town. At Shag, we bought our biggest pieces: a $1200 couch and a $1200 buffet. Gorgeous both of them. Shag was having a sale so we even got a discount. But we put the couch into our new (and I must say pristine and completely dry) garage for four days and then moved it into our living room, which gets the evening sun. The couch, for awhile, got direct summer sun on it. A few days later I noticed the couch was blossoming--with mildew. The smell became overwhelming. I took the couch outside, turned it over, and discovered all the staples holding the protective fabric over the underside were deeply rusted. Old rust, too, not just recent. I tore that off (no other way to get inside) and dry rodent deposits poured out--probably a half-gallon bucketful. The mildew smell was strong. I unzipped the long seat cushion and put my nose into it. Mildew. Long story short, I called Shag and asked them to come and take a look at this. The old rust and the dry rodent evidence made me think this couch, as they later verified, had been in storage for years. It came from the Bay Area. I lived there, and I know how damp it is. Portland was having one of its hottest and driest summers in years. I just couldn't believe all this had happened since we'd bought the couch. But that's what the woman at Shag said. She refused to come and take a look. She guaranteed me that the couch had been pristine before we bought it. She flat out said it was our fault and it had obviously happened in the four days it spent in our garage. Well, it's three months later, my wife and I have been buying all kinds of mildew and mold-killing products and spraying the couch over and over. No luck. The problem is clearly so deep inside the cushion and the inner springs of the couch that I doubt we'll ever get it clean. That's about $1000 down the drain. And Shag cannot even conceive of the possibility that the mildew problem had been planted years ago and was just waiting for a nice hot summer to burst into full bloom. The maddening thing is, there's nothing I can do except eat it. And this is one of the most expensive pieces of furniture I've ever bought. It just feels so unfair. But Shag doesn't care. Just thought you might want to be warned about how they treat their customers when there's a problem.
