I've been going to Common Ground for over 20 years
The new location on 33rd and it is newer and more spacious but still open air, still clothing optional (I admit it takes a little getting use to but there is nothing like standing naked steaming in the rain after a 1/2 hour in the hot tub).
And it is owned by a non profit so no one is taking money off the top, everything goes back to the workers and to improving the facility. ( and pay off the debts created by the move). It's a great community of people who care about what they do, about each other and the community.
It is reasonably inexpensive and you can volunteer in a number ways and get to the use hot tub and sauna for trade. A nice benefit when so many people have more time than money.
Even a half hour of soaking can make a hug difference in my day.

Best Place for Massage in Portland!!
Common Ground is the ONLY place I get massage in Portland. Their co-operative owner/ therapists provide relaxing and therapeutic massage in a wonderful, comfortable atmosphere.

The new salt-water hot tub (with deep end!) has fantastic hydrotherapy jets to work out those knots at the end of a work day. The new sauna is the hottest I've experienced in Portland.

Common Ground's soak/ sauna area is clothing optional. As a woman I've always felt comfortable in that environment. Sometimes I wear a towel, sometimes I don't. For those women who don't wish to be in mixed company (clothed or not) they do offer women-only hours which are quite nice. :)

They offer memberships, which I think after 10 years of visiting them, I probably should sign up for!

Simple yet elegant and, above all else, quiet and RELAXING
Everything about this place is perfect. It has it's own small parking lot so you don't have to deal with the headache of street parking. Upon entering there's a small but cozy reception area and waiting room that offers tea and water for free. The receptionists are sweet, calming, and explain everything in a comforting way. Having never been there before they led us back and showed us everything. There's a beautiful changing area with large and small cubbies to hold your belongings. The sink area has some wonderful decor and a water cooler with cups. The shower area is open and has 4 shower heads and foaming shower gel in a lovely tiled room. It was the most relaxing shower I've ever had. The sauna smells beautifully of cedar and is kept at just the right temperature. Normally I feel overheated and uncomfortable in them but I had a blissful experience in this one.

The tub outside is a genius design in the shape of a "C" so that there are two effective sections allowing you to feel a little more alone and private than you would otherwise with that many people in the tub (we were alone when we got there at 6 p.m. and by the time we were done there were about 9 people total). While outside, the soaking area is completely quiet except for the occasional bird chirp. We delighted in watching the sky change colors overhead at sunset. The lighting and decor throughout the changing, shower, sauna, and tub areas are simple but elegant without being pretentious, dim, and thoroughly relaxing. It's the best combination of low-key and hippy with upscale and elegant.

It is clothing optional and I brought my swimsuit just in case I felt the need for it but everyone who was there while we were was respectful and I feel completely comfortable nekked as a jaybird. My boyfriend wore his swimsuit and was also comfortable w/o feeling awkward for keeping it on.

My boyfriend and I went here after I got him a GC for X-mas and we had the most divine and relaxing time. Honestly, I was expecting to be fairly relaxed, but after my hour there I literally had difficulty concentrating on the drive back home and we sat around in blissful state for the entire rest of the evening practically unable to move. I felt like we'd spent the entire day meditating and getting massaged. I was so impressed and can't wait to return. The prices are reasonable and worth every penny. There was even lotion by the sinks which helped my skin feel divine after all the time in the hot tub, saunas, and showers which ordinarily would dry my skin out a bit.

the only place to get massage!
I LOVE the new place! The huge hot tub is wonderful-the sauna is beautiful and smells like cedar, but the massage is simply the best in town. Since there are many therapists I can always get in and get a great massage. Paired with time in the hot tub and sauna it's the only way to deal with the wet and cold.

Best open air tubs and massage therapists in Portland
Common Ground Wellness Center in NE Portland is as close to nirvana as one can find in Portland. I have been to the new facility four times and it gets better each time. The staff is friendly, the service excellent, the place is spotless, the showers (four) are refreshing, the sauna and the hot tubs are set at the perfect temperatures for optimal comfort. As for the open air hot tub setting, it simply doesn't get any better. The prices are very reasonable for the value received. The professionalism of the massage therapists on staff is impressive. They listen. They offer suggestions. They deliver.

This place is truly one of Portland's treasures.
